The American Legion Legacy Run
Indianapolis to Baltimore, Aug. 23-26, 2015
National Staff and volunteers on the American Legion Riders Advisory Committee have begun route planning and other preparations for the 2015 American Legion Legacy Run, a fundraiser for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship. Online registration is open now and will continue until just before the Run begins on Aug. 23, 2015. Important dates:
- • Aug. 22 - Assembly and final registration, American Legion Post 64, Indianapolis.
- • Aug. 23-26 - The American Legion Legacy Run
- • Aug. 27-30 - ALR activities and events in the Baltimore area to be determined.
- • Aug. 31-Sept. 2 - The 97th annual American Legion National Convention
Three separate route plans are under way for final selection during the ALR National Committee meeting in March. Once a suitable plan is selected, staff and selected volunteers will conduct a rental car cage run in March to confirm post visitations, refueling locations, and to negotiate hotel and lodging terms favorable to our participants. During the spring and early summer, additional cage runs and one final motorcycle rehearsal run with key volunteers will confirm evening lodging arrangements, post visitations and law enforcement support. The run is now planned to last for four days with 250 miles or fewer each day.
The routes under consideration provide options for visits to posts in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Goals at present include shorter riding days for the riders and several key visits to prominent attractions, VA medical centers, American Legion posts and tourist attractions. Also in the discussion phase at this time are visits to the Flight 93 Memorial and the Gettysburg National Battlefield.
The American Legion Legacy Run is open to all licensed motorcyclists with machines (motorcycles, scooters, trikes, Spyders, etc.) of 750cc displacement and above. Riders and passengers must be 18 years of age or older and in good enough physical condition for a multiday, multistate motorcycle run. Motorcycles may be inspected at any time by Run officials for overloading, tire wear, electrical systems, unsafe trailers, and braking systems. DOT-approved helmets are mandatory wear at all times during the Legacy Run.
